The borough of Wigan is embarking on a £11 million project to refit 31,000 LED street lights over the next 3 years.

Wigan has 5,500 units in place currently and expects to be making savings of £1 million annually when all the lights are fitted.

The Philips LED light bulbs and control system is expected to cut electricity bills by 60% and will last for over 20 years.

Wigan Council Leader, Lord Peter Smith, said:

I know some councils are switching lights off to save money but I don’t think that’s something people would want in Wigan Borough. We’ve instead come up with a new scheme to replace our existing lights with LED light bulbs which will still offer the same service the public expects but will be considerably cheaper.
